The Burgin Bulldogs basketball team (1-4) played their first of two matchups against district rival Trinity Christian (4-1) on Friday, Dec. 13. The Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season three days prior over Casey County. Senior JT Boswell and sophomore Micah Mayes combined for 38 points on 6-13 shooting from deep to lead Burgin to their first win against a 12th Region opponent.
Head Coach Todd Claunch was happy with the 61-30 win against the Rebels, but he was
“I was more proud of them in their performance in almost every aspect of this game than I was in the Casey County game. I told them that games like Casey are easy when you are just clicking in every way and your opponent is struggling to get one to fall,” said Claunch.
Trinity Christian Academy was determined to get back in the win column after a 59-25 loss to Mercer County three days prior, and Burgin was forced to match their physicality in the paint throughout the game. Mayes got Burgin on the scoreboard first after draining a corner three. Much like in their win over the Rebels, Burgin was lethal from behind the arc, and Landon Sexton’s movement led to several open shots in the opening quarter. Sexton assisted Mayes’ second three and Hudson Taylor’s first, and Burgin led 9-6. Casey Dodson put his body on the line play-after-play, but TCA’s duo of big men, Allen Okorley and Noah Westerfield made it difficult for Burgin to make an impact on the glass. The Titans’ advantage down low was negated again and again by Burgin’s sharpshooters. This time Dodson drove into the lane before kicking out to Taylor for another trey.
