The Burgin Bulldogs girls’ tennis team came back to beat the Mercer County Titans in the first round of regions on Tuesday, April 28. Burgin celebrated their seven seniors before the match, honoring Kate Hatfield, Raegan Taylor, Taylor Isaacs, Emma Claunch, Brooklyn Pittman, Kennedy Peavler and Mariah Rossman.
In a best-of-five match that included three singles and two doubles, Mercer took an early lead, winning the first two singles matches. Mercer’s Emily Bohman beat Peavler 8-0, and Lacie Burrows beat Pittman 8-2. Rossman won the Bulldogs’ lone single match, defeating Maggie Hood 8-2 to keep Burgin in it.
The duo of Claunch and Isaacs won a commanding 8-2 victory over Mercer’s Rosie Hernandez and Averee Johns to even up the match 2-2. It came down to a back-and-forth doubles match from Hatfield and Taylor versus the Titans’ Olivia Rogers and Nevaeh Ader. The Bulldogs rallied back after going down two points and won the match 8-6 to advance to the second round of the region.
In the third season of the Burgin tennis program, they have improved each year under Head Coach Todd Claunch. Advancing in regions is quite a milestone for the team and the program, given their three years of experience.
