The Burgin boys basketball team (4-9) went on the road to beat the Trinity Christian Titans (0-13), 70-57, on Friday, Jan. 9.

Burgin scored a season high 70 points and had four players score in the double digits. Senior Phillip Becknell and sophomore Hudson Taylor both had 17 points, with Taylor hitting three 3-pointers.

Senior Landon Sexton pitched in 15 points with two 3-pointers, and fellow senior Micah Mayes added 12 points off the bench.

Taylor put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard first with a 3-pointer and followed it up with a steal that led to junior Mattix Cope scoring in the paint, 5-0. Trinity Christian fought back with a 3-pointer of their own and split a pair of free throws, 5-4. Sexton picked it up for the Bulldogs with a layup and two 3-pointers, 13-8. Becknell kicked it out to senior Jase Thompson for a triple, and Taylor added two free throws to give Burgin a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 18-8.

The Bulldogs’ defensive pressure carried over to the second quarter with a steal that resulted in another free throw for Taylor and they forced Trinity into an over-and-back turnover, 19-8. Becknell had his first points of the game with a layup, and Mayes scored the following possession with a rebound and putback, 24-13. Taylor had his fourth steal of the game and finished it with a layup, but picked up his third foul shortly after and had to sit out the rest of the half, 26-13.

Mayes pushed Burgin’s lead to 16 points with a 3-pointer, and Becknell followed it up with two free throws after getting fouled in the paint, 31-15. The Titans started to find some offense with a floater in the paint and three in consecutive possessions, 31-20. The rest of the half played out with Cope making one of two free throws and senior Brayden Pittman scoring in the paint, 34-22.

Burgin had a great opening half with five 3-pointers and went to the free-throw line on seven different occasions. Trinity Christian started to find their offense late once Taylor checked out with three fouls.

The Titans opened the second half with five quick points from the free throw line and a 3-pointer.
