Mercer County boys soccer’s season came to an abrupt and heartbreaking end in the opening round of the 46th District Tournament on Thursday, Oct. 9, after advancing to penalty kicks against the East Jessamine Jaguars (4-12-4).

Due to heavy rainfall on the originally scheduled opening day of the tournament, both rounds were postponed by two days. The match didn’t begin until 8 p.m., when the sun had set. The darkness brought 50º temperatures, and the Titans never seemed to warm up to their usual standards.

Much like every game they played this fall, Mercer didn’t struggle to create chances; they had the energy to compete, but lacked the finishing touch on both ends of the lineup.

Mercer, who felt somewhat disappointed to have only beaten the Jaguars 3-1 earlier this fall, had hoped to jump out to an early lead and kill the Jaguars’ hopes of pulling off an upset. The Titans created chance after chance but could never capitalize, forcing several outstanding saves from Jaguar goalkeeper Josiah Drug.
