Mercer County boys soccer (8-7-2) recently wrapped up the regular season with its most impressive win this fall on Tuesday, Sept. 30, against 12th Region rival Somerset (8-9-2). The Briar Jumpers entered the game listed just above the Titans in 12th Region rankings and had just defeated North Laurel 5-1 a day prior.

The Briar Jumpers learned soon after the game began, the Titans felt they had a point to prove. Too often this season Mercer has narrowly beaten opponents they are much better than, or drawn with teams they outplayed, but on this night, they showed both themselves and their fans they can dominate strong opponents from start to finish.

The Titans were playing fast and physical from the opening whistle, and both teams battled for possession in the opening 10 minutes. Mercer finally got their breakthrough on a corner 15 minutes into the game. Senior Daniel Butler returned to the field for the first time in over a month due to a knee injury and made an immediate impact, rising high to head the ball toward goal. Butler’s shot ricocheted off of a Briar Jumper defender and landed in front of Grant Bennett, who smashed the ball past the keeper (15’).
