The Mercer County Lady Titans ended their season with a 12th region loss to the Wayne County Lady Cardinals, 69-31, on Monday, March 3. Mercer started one sophomore, three freshmen and an eighth grader, to Wayne’s two seniors, one junior and two sophomores. While it wasn’t the finish to the season Coach Chris Souder may have wanted, it did give hope to the program’s future once his young players gain some experience.

The Lady Titans were sluggish getting started and the Lady Cardinals took full advantage. Wayne was hot from the 3-point line and at the end of the first half 27 of their 37 points were from threes. They ended up hitting 15 three-point shots for the night.

Mercer won the tip-off and put the first points on the board with a nice reverse layup from eighth grader Cardin Sickles with an assist from sophomore Izzie Carlton. Wayne dropped their first 3-point shot and went on a 12-point scoring run until Sickles drove from down the baseline for Mercer’s second basket with only 35 seconds left in the quarter. Wayne hit a couple of free throws and Mercer had possession but couldn’t get a shot off before time ran out in the first quarter. Mercer took good shots, but nothing seemed to fall in and the score was 14-4 at the end of the first.
