Meghan Owens has only been competing in the javelin throw for just over a year, but the 14-year-old already has a national title and record to her name.

The incoming Mercer County Senior High School freshman won the javelin throw at the New Balance High School Nationals in Greensboro, N.C., Friday, June 19, with a distance of 136 feet, 4 inches.

Not only did she win the national championship, she also broke a meet and national record with the throw.

Owens’ rise to a national champion hasn’t taken as long as many others, though. She only started throwing the javelin last June, with hopes of winning the 2014 Bluegrass State Games.
