The Mercer County Titans softball team (14-12) beat the Burgin Bulldogs (7-17) 15-0 in three innings in the opening round of the 46th District tournament on Monday, May 18, at West Jessamine.
Mercer switched between three different pitchers, with senior Ella Davis starting in the circle, and had three strikeouts. Sophomore Ava Musick and freshman Reese Ransdell took turns on the bump as well. Junior Jaley Bowman hit an inside-the-park home run that scored four runs for the Titans.
The Bulldogs started sophomore Leah Jenkins at pitcher and, after giving up 10 runs in the first inning, made the change to senior Ashton Lester. Lester gave up five runs in the second inning. Sophomore Baleigh Thompson was the only bulldog to reach base on a walk in the third inning.
In the first inning, Davis had three strikeouts with Lester leading off for the Bulldogs. Jenkins and sophomore Jocelyn Stanley were unable to make contact to end the top of the first inning. Bowman led off for the Titans and hit the first pitch to left field for a double. Bowman stole third base and scored on a wild pitch to put Mercer on the scoreboard, 1-0. Juniors Lily Hart and Izzie Carlton were walked, followed by Muscik to load the bases for the Titans.
