Lincoln County
The Mercer girl’s soccer team tied Lincoln County (10-3-2), the top team in the 12th Region Monday night, 1-all.
After a scoreless first half, Mercer’s Shannon Murray put her team up 1-0 in the early stages of the second half. It looked like Mercer would pull off the upset on the Lady Patriots home turf until a free kick taken by Lincoln’s Madi Adams in the 72nd minute tied the game at 1-1. After eight more minutes with no deciding goal, the game ended in the tie.
West Jessamine
The Lady Titans suffered their fifth loss of the season, falling to district opponent West Jessamine (10-3-4), 1-0.
With the loss, Mercer falls to 2-2 in the district and will play East Jessamine in the opening round of the 46th District Tournament. The Lady Titans took both games between the teams earlier this year, but both wins came in shootouts.
Anderson County
Mercer picked up their 10th win of the season Thursday night defeating their neighbors to the north, the Lady Bearcats of Anderson County (6-9-1), 3-0.
A relentless attack by the Lady Titans paid off in the 13th minute. Mid-fielder Shannon Murray drove deep into the Lady Bearcats penalty box before finding teammate Savanah Gagnon on the back post. Gagnon’s shot beat the keeper, but bounced off the crossbar back into play. Before the Anderson County defense cleared the danger, Gentry Brown headed the ball in the net giving Mercer the lead, 1-0.
“We started out a little slow in the first,” said Mercer Head Coach Tony Brown. “We were trying to play too much long ball which isn’t our game. We got it together after the first 10 minutes and began moving the ball better which resulted in some goals.”
Murray picked up her own goal, dribbling from one side of Anderson’s 18-yard-box to the other before shooting and scoring in the 28th minute of play, giving Mercer a two goal lead.
“We were able to control the ball a lot more in the end of the first half and all of the second half,” said Brown. “I don’t want to take anything away from Anderson County, they moved the ball extremely well, we just had their number tonight.”
Murray added her second goal in the 48th minute, putting Mercer up, 3-0. That score would hold for the remainder of the game as Lady Titans’ keeper Amanda Howard picked up her seventh shutout of the year.
The Lady Titans return to the field this Saturday, Sept. 29 when they host the Lady Indians of Montgomery County (3-8) at 10:30 a.m.
