The Burgin Bulldogs boys basketball team fell 57-84 to the Model Patriots on Thursday, Dec. 4. It was a foul-filled game, with both teams playing every player as they settled into the young season. With 48 fouls called in the game, it really slowed down the pace. The full-court defense from both sides and aggressive defense from Burgin kept the whistles going.
Burgin had nine of their 10 players score with two in double digits. Sophomore Hudson Taylor led the Bulldogs in scoring with 11 points, followed by senior Landon Sexton, who had 10, and sophomore Joshua Stine added nine points. Matix Cope and Micah Mays each had seven points as well.
The Bulldogs were the first on the scoreboard with senior Brayden Pittman grabbing an offensive rebound and senior Casey Becknell turning it into two free throws, 2-0. Model took the lead with a midrange shot and a layup off an inbounds play, 2-4. Pittman scored in the paint and Taylor hit a corner three with an assist from Becknell to tie the game, 7-7. The Patriots went on a 10-point run as both teams picked up multiple fouls, 7-17. The first quarter ended with Becknell making two free throws and Model making a 3-pointer, 9-20.
Model struck first in the second quarter, scoring in the post, but Sexton answered with a jumpshot in the midrange off a pass from Jase Thompson, 11-22. Four fouls later, Burgin made another bucket from Becknell, finding Mays cutting to the rim for a layup, 13-24. A few more whistles later, Sexton added a free throw and a floater in the paint, 16-24. The Patriots made two free throws, and Becknell added another assist, finding Pittman under the basket, 18-26. Model scored five quick points, Cope stopped the run with a 3-pointer to make it a 10-point game, 21-31.
Model went to the line twice and made all four free throws and on the other end, Sexton split a pair, 22-35. Stine took his turn at the free-throw line and made one, but missed the second. Cope was able to get the rebound on the miss and he was fouled and made both of his, 25-35. Stine went back to the line and made two shots after a hard foul and the home crowd growing tired of the whistles, 27-39. Model was able to score on a layup before the first half buzzer expired giving them a 14 lead going into halftime, 27-41.
