Mercer County Schools has been accepting nominations for their inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame Class, scheduled to be announced this summer. The Hall of Fame plans to recognize: “remarkable athletes, coaches, and contributors who have played a vital role in our schools’ athletic success for over our 100-year history,” according to the school district’s website.
The Inaugural class of Hall of Fame inductees will be announced in June, and will include 50 of the most historically significant and talented athletes, coaches, administrators, teams and other contributors in the County’s history. The Mercer County Hall of Fame will include athletes who may have graduated before the consolidation of schools across the county in 1957. Alumni of Harrodsburg, McAfee, Salvisa, Cornishville, Rose Hill, Shakertown and Westside can also be nominated. In addition, the committee will also accept nominations for distinguished alumni of these schools, those who may have achieved athletic success professionally or otherwise after high school graduation.
The original 50 member class will be recognized 10 selections at a time. Meaning, each year, 10 members of the inaugural class will be officially inducted. Upon the inclusion of the final 10 member class in 2029, the committee will announce seven new additions to the Hall of Fame in 2030, and each year thereafter. The seven additions will include 5 individuals and 2 teams.
Athletes inducted into the Hall of Fame must have graduated 10 years prior to their nomination. Coaches must have been retired at least three years before their nomination, or reached the age of 65, and teams can be nominated as soon as 5 years after their season. The nine member committee is still receiving nominations until Tuesday, April 1. Members of the public can nominate people or teams they believe should be in the Mercer County Athletics’ Hall of Fame by picking up nomination forms at the Mercer County Board of Education Office, located at 530 Perryville Street, or online mercer.kyschools.us/athletic-hall-of-fame/nomination-forms.
