The Mercer County Titan boys soccer team (1-10) were desperately searching for their first win of the season until they met to face the Anderson County Bearcats last Tuesday, Sept. 17. The win was no doubt spurred by the most promising performance of the Titans season thus far, when a week prior they played a physical and tactically sound 80 minutes against the Boyle County Rebels, holding them within a goal until the closing moments and eventually falling 2-0.

While all 11 Titan players played an important part in the win, it was senior forward Jordan Piazza who walked off of the field with his first ever hat trick. Piazza secured the opening goal on the first shot of the game with a long distance, floating, and curling shot that the Bearcat keeper gave up on and couldn’t correct after realizing just how much the shot curved.

“It was probably one of the best experiences to have. Doing that and helping my team secure the lead, that just felt great to me,” said Piazza.

More recently, Mercer County faced the Garrard County Golden Lions (8-4) on Tuesday, Sept. 24, in the Titans’ first home game since the season opener against Danville on Aug. 13.

The Titans had plenty of chances early on, and a one-two between Mijaia Dunn and Cannon Buchanan resulted in the Titans first breakaway, and shot. Moments later, a clever set-piece play ended in Piazza smacking a volley off of the crossbar. 12 minutes into the game, the Titans got onto the scoreboard after a perfectly crossed corner from Tanner Ison fell on the head of Ian Alcorn and into the goal.

The Golden Lions pulled one back moments later when a long ball forward to Zak Dailey resulted in a cross to freshman Lucas Wilson, who rocketed the ball into the ceiling of the net.

Freshman Liam Moffett battled for a loose ball during Mercer’s 5-5 draw with Garrard County.

The Titans will be back in action in Harrodsburg, pending inclement weather, on Saturday, Sept. 28, when they face Western Hills with a noon kickoff.
