The Mercer County Fiscal Court has hired a new director for the county animal shelter.

At a special-called meeting on Friday, Jan. 30, the fiscal court voted unanimously to hire Lisa Coleman as the new director, effective July 2, at a salary of $44,000 plus benefits.

Staff at the animal shelter will cover for Coleman, who will assume the position once she retires from her current position as a speech therapist.

“We’re excited for the programming this will bring to our community,” Mercer County Judge Executive Sarah Steele said.

According to a Facebook post from the non-profit animal rescue agency PuppyLove KY, Coleman is a Harrodsburg native. She is the wife of David Coleman, the former manager of Old Fort Harrod State Park, who now serves as the county building inspector. Coleman began volunteering at the animal shelter over a year ago and has managed the foster program at PuppyLove KY.
