CLARIFICATION:

Superintendent Jason Booher offered this clarification.

“The $25,000 agreement with Whitaker Bank was not for naming rights, as the headline and article indicated. Instead, the contract was for the placement of two Whitaker Bank logos on the gym floor for up to 15 years or until the floor is next refinished. This is the same type of advertising sponsorship we have long used across our outdoor athletic facilities—soccer, baseball, softball, tennis, football, and golf—many of which are visible along Moberly Road.

“The Whitaker Bank sponsorship helped offset the cost of refinishing the gym floor this summer, and in return, their logo was added to the floor, similar to what is done in many college and professional arenas,” Booher said.

“Some community members have expressed confusion because we recently named the floor “Chris Souder Court,” and the article’s reference to “naming rights” has led to misunderstanding. I simply wanted to ensure the correct information was available.”

The Mercer County Board of Education has approved an agreement with Whitaker Bank to place the bank’s logos on the Mercer County Senior High School gym floor.

At their regular meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 18, the school board voted unanimously to approve an advertising agreement with Whitaker. The bank is paying $25,000 at $5,000 a year for five years for up to 15 years or the lifetime of the floor.

“They’re hoping they’ll get 10 years out of it,” Superintendent Jason Booher told the school board.

At the end of the 15 years, both parties would revisit the agreement.

School board Vice Chair Amber Franceschi asked what would happen if the school had to refurnish the floor. It was explained Whitaker would have first right of refusal.

Board Chair Randy Phillips said Whitaker had been a great community partner.

So just taking the misleading headline in stride, like it was normal behavior? It’s not.
