Nappy Roots Headline Heart of Kentucky Juneteenth Festival On June 21; Juneteenth Street Revival Starts June 16

The Fifth Annual Heart of Kentucky Juneteenth Celebration happens Friday, June 20, and Saturday, June 21, at West Lane Park (345 West Lane).

Nappy Roots, the Southern-fried hip-hop group from Bowling Green, are the headliners. Best known for their hit songs “Po’ Folks,” “Awnaw,” “Found’ The Globe” and “Good Day,” Nappy Roots are scheduled to perform on Saturday, June 21, at 9 p.m.

Also new this year is the Freedom Swing Golf Tournament at Old Bridge Golf Course (1 Old Bridge Road, Danville) on Thursday, June 19, starting at noon. Here is the full schedule, according to the Juneteenth website.

Everything starts with the Juneteenth Street Revival hosted by the Harrodsburg African American Historical Society. The revival happens nightly on West Broadway Street—the oldest street in Kentucky—from Fort Street to Forsythe Street on Monday, June 16, Tuesday, June 17, and Wednesday, June 18, starting at 7 p.m.

Pastor Donald Wayne Smith of Centennial Baptist Church will serve as master of ceremonies. Here is the scheduled list of pastors participating in the revival.

Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is a holiday commemorating the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas in June 1865, and more generally the emancipation of African-American slaves throughout the Confederate South. Celebrated on June 19, Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021.

The Heart of Kentucky Juneteenth Festival is free, but organizers are charging a $10 fee for 10 feet by 10 feet VIP spaces.
