The Harrodsburg City Commission is hiring the law firm of Sturgill, Turner, Barker and Moloney to handle a citizen complaint against the Harrodsburg Police Department.
At their regular meeting on Monday, Feb. 10, the city commission voted unanimously to authorize Mayor Bob Williams to sign an agreement with the law firm.
HPD Chief Scott Elder had no comment. The Harrodsburg Herald filed an open records request for information pertaining to the complaint, but had not received the information before press time.
“It is very early in the process and I don’t know how much we can do,” Chief Administrative Officer Stacey Maynard said.
Last year, Jennifer Kazimer—who, with her husband, formerly owned the Vault and Kentucky Fudge and also formerly served on the Harrodsburg City Commission—filed a complaint against former HPD Chief Tim Hurt. In August 2024, the Harrodsburg city commission voted to withdraw the investigation into the complaint against Hurt at Kazimer’s request. In September, Hurt retired from the HPD and Elder was announced as the interim chief. Elder was named the permanent chief of the HPD in December.
Police conduct is a hot topic in the area, with Danville citizens pressuring that city’s government to fire a Danville police officer after a controversial arrest in October 2024. On Monday, Feb. 10, Danville residents demonstrated, calling for the dismissal of Danville Officer T.J. Godbey—who formerly served with the HPD—and the suspension of others over the arrest of a man suffering from dementia at a Danville Walmart in October 2024. A petition calling for Godbey’s dismissal has gathered 22,534 verified signatures on Change.org.
On Monday, City Attorney Norrie Currens announced that the Government 101 presentation by the Kentucky League of Cities had been moved to Monday, March 24.
