Building Momentum:
2021-2024 Highlights
Coming out of Covid, the Tourist Commission looked to go down a new path by putting more of an emphasis on investing in our community and did such with key investments like
$302,000 in sponsorships for events and organizations in 2021 and funding for projects such as the Young’s Park Splash Pad. These efforts supported local businesses and enhanced the area’s family-friendly appeal. The year also marked the creation of over two dozen community-focused videos, amplifying Harrodsburg’s story to broader audiences.
By 2022, the commission’s impact had grown exponentially, with $465,000 in sponsorships and record-breaking restaurant and lodging revenues. Launching the “Visit Mercer” app modernized visitor engagement, while initiatives such as the Downtown Lights Project and partnerships with LEX18 and LAMAR Advertising expanded the region’s visibility. The first annual Shamrock Shuffle was a resounding success, laying the foundation for community traditions that would drive tourism.
The successes of 2023 cemented Mercer County’s reputation as a destination for events and heritage tourism. With nearly $500,000 in sponsorships, groundbreaking collaborations like the “Joy Ride,” “Horse Power,” and “Faith Trail” campaigns, and commercials aired during the Super Bowl, the Tourist Commission placed the community squarely in the spotlight. Investments like the $100,000 contribution to Old Fort Harrod State Park underscored the commission’s commitment to preserving and enhancing local history.
The momentum carried into 2024, with $593,000 allocated for events, organizations, and significant milestones like hosting the 250th Celebration. New staff positions ensured the commission could handle its ever-growing portfolio, while a redesigned logo and website signaled a fresh, modernized approach. Partnerships with the University of Kentucky’s
Men’s Basketball Team, Rupp Arena, and expanded billboard campaigns in major U.S. cities brought national recognition to Mercer County. Social media engagement skyrocketed, with followers growing from over 2,300 to nearly 15,000 in under four years.
Vision for 2025 and Beyond
The future looks bright as the Tourist Commission sets its sights on continued growth and innovation. Plans to expand existing events and create new ones will further solidify Mercer County’s reputation as a vibrant tourism hub. The addition of an entertainment district downtown promises to revitalize the area, making it a lively destination for visitors and locals alike.
The commission’s focus on sports tourism marks an exciting new chapter, with plans to attract events that will draw athletes and spectators to the area. Infrastructure projects and the installation of kiosks around town will enhance accessibility and visitor experience, ensuring Mercer County remains a top choice for travelers.
Looking further ahead, the commission plans to expand into larger markets, showcasing Harrodsburg’s unique charm to audiences nationwide. With its forward-thinking vision, the Tourist Commission is poised to achieve even greater success while staying true to its mission of supporting the community and fostering economic development.

Can you explain in detail the kiosk idea, please?
This is from the MediaWorx website: “At MediaWorx, we have developed a system that incorporates modern electronic kiosks and touch-screen displays, along with software and visuals that are stunning. These self-contained devices can be used for way-finding, advertising, data collection and more.”
It’s a touch screen that provides information on local dining and events.
