Harrodsburg has been named one of the most scenic towns in Kentucky. That’s according to WorldAtlas.com, a website that launched in 1994 and bills itself as one of the largest publishing resources in geography and other topics it covers, including sociology, demography, environment, economics, politics and travel. Other Kentucky cities named were Cave City, Slade, Cumberland, Clermont, Carrollton, Richmond, Cambellsville and Corbin.
According to WorldAtlas.com, one of the reasons Harrodsburg is so scenic is because of Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. The website invites readers to “visit the beautiful natural landscape of the shakers at the 3,000 acre Shaker Village,” which has “36 miles of trails which are ideal for hikers, horseback riders, and even classic carriages.”
While Kentucky’s state parks are not as well known as the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone Park, WorldAtlas.com insists they shouldn’t be overlooked. “Kentucky is the only place in the world you can see the largest cave system and a moonbow in a single state.”
One of the most unique state parks in the Commonwealth is right here in Harrodsburg. Old Fort Harrod State Park offers more than a full-scale replica of the fort built by James Harrod in 1774. It’s also home to the historic Mansion Museum, the George Rogers Clark Federal Monument, the Lincoln Marriage Temple and the oldest cemetery west of the Alleghenies. And don’t forget the Osage Orange tree at Old Fort Harrod, which is both taller and broader than the National Champion but remains the Unofficial National Champion due to its split trunk.
Mercer County is also home to 22 streams, 15 creeks and three rivers as well as Herrington Lake, the deepest in Kentucky.
