The Mercer County Fiscal Court is creating a joint committee with the Harrodsburg City Commission to discuss issues that impact both the county and the city.
At the fiscal court’s regular meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 27, Judge-Executive Sarah Steele said they had invited the city commission to hold a joint working session, but the city preferred to form a committee made up of two city commissioners and two county magistrates. Magistrates Tim Darland and Stephen “Pete” Elliott volunteered to serve on the committee, which is tentatively scheduled to meet next Wednesday, Sept. 4, at noon.
“I think the whole bunch ought to get together one time,” said Elliott.
“We can bring that up next week,” Darland said.
Other magistrates also felt that a joint meeting of both bodies would be better.
“I feel like the whole court needs to be involved in this,” said Magistrate Susan Barrington.
“You run into quorum issues,” said Harrodsburg Mayor Bob Williams, who was in attendance Tuesday.
“I think we need to get the ball rolling,” Judge Steele said. “We have got to work together on a lot of items.”
Harrodsburg Chief Administrative Officer Stacey Maynard and City Attorney Norrie Currens will also attend committee meetings.
