Harrodsburg is one of seven towns in Kentucky that has been celebrated online for its thriving local businesses.
WorldAtlas.com recently named Harrodsburg and six other towns for their small businesses “bursting with individuality.” The website invited readers to “explore beyond huge franchises and discover a world of independent shops that capture the vibrant characteristics of the state.”

Noting Harrodsburg’s status as the oldest town in Kentucky, WorldAtlas said old Hogtown “continues to foster a thriving community speckled with one-of-a-kind outlets and indie cafes.”

Among the local businesses the website called out were Blush Boutique (106 S Main Street), which it called “your one-stop shop for cute tops, trendy accessories and Kentucky souvenirs,” and J. Sampson Antiques & Books (107 South Main Street) for curious articles, rare books and appraisals.

WorldAtlas invited its readers to “fill up with good food at Granny’s Diner” (513 West Broadway Street) and order a Phoebe—a double espresso with a nice blend of caramel and white chocolate—at Harrod’s Perk and Chill (540 North College Street).

Other Kentucky towns with thriving businesses listed by the website include Versailles, Murray, Frankfort, London, Elizabethtown and Hazard.

In the daily rush, it can be easy to overlook everything that Harrodsburg has to offer. Take a refresher course every Tuesday this summer at the Midweek Farmers Market at Olde Town Park (126 South Main Street). Vendors offer locally raised produce, meat, eggs, baked goods, canned goods, honey and homemade and handcrafted items from 4 to 7 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, the market will move to the Mercer County Fairgrounds (560 Linden Avenue). For more information, call 859-734-4378 or visit their Facebook page @Mercer County Farmers Market.

In addition to the Midweek Market, there is also the monthly Friday Night on Main event. Musician Daniel Cain will perform at Friday Night On Main at Olde Town Park (126 South Main Street) on Friday, July 12. In addition to music, there is also food and shopping from 5 to 10 p.m. The music starts at 6 p.m. For more information, call the Downtown Harrodsburg Main Street Program at 859-734-6811, [email protected], downtownharrodsburg.com, or email [email protected] or visit their website at downtownharrodsburg.com or Facebook @HarrodsburgFirst.
