The Mercer County Lady Titans (11-8) snapped a five-game skid of losses on senior night Thursday, May 9, when they defeated the South Laurel Lady Cardinals (23-8) 5-2, thanks to three key runs in the bottom of the first inning. Not only had the Lady Titans not won a game since April 19, but the Lady Cardinals traveled to Harrodsburg as the top team in Region 13 and a team that won 12 of its last 15 games.

Seniors Ashley Howard, Hanna Beasley, Peyton Boyd and Haylee Ransdell were recognized before the game for their contributions to Mercer County softball over the last four years.

“I am really proud of this senior class. They all have contributed in many ways to help this team succeed. They have left their mark on the Mercer County softball program. My only regret is not having another season with them on our team,” said Lady Titans Head Coach Darren Ransdell.

Jayla Sanders set the tone on Mercer’s second at bat. The sophomore delivered a bunt down the left field line and beat the throw to first base. Howard smacked a hard grounder on the next at-bat, and the Lady Cardinal shortstop couldn’t control it. The Lady Titans had their game faces on and caught South Laurel off guard. Four errors over three at bats allowed Mercer to get three runs on the board before earning their second out. Ava Musick hit a line drive into the dirt in front of the Lady Cardinal center fielder, and the South Laurel third baseman fumbled the ball before overthrowing home. Boyd bunted and scored Musick from third base on the next at bat. Boyd was originally called out, but after some conferring between the referees, she was put back on first. It didn’t matter, though, as South Laurel earned two outs quickly to keep the damage to a minimum.
