Get ready to celebrate Juneteeth this weekend.
On Saturday, June 19, the Heart of Kentucky Juneteenth Celebration will be held at West Lane Park in Harrodsburg. The festival starts at 10 a.m..
In addition to food, vendors and speakers, there will be music from DJ D-Rock and King Dame starting at 3:30 p.m. and comedy by Heather Romero starting at 8 p.m. There will also be a cornhole tournament and a city vs. city softball game.
Juneteenth is also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day. The holiday—which commemorates June 19, 1865, when federal forces liberated the enslaved in Galveston, Texas—is now celebrated across the nation. According to CNN, the House of Representatives is expected to vote on legislation that would establish June 19 as Juneteenth National Independence Day, a US federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. The bill is expected to pass the House after the Senate unanimously passed the legislation Tuesday. Once the bill passes, it will head to President Joe Biden’s desk to be signed into law.

Organizers of the Juneteenth celebration in Harrodsburg say there is still a need for volunteers and vendors. For more information, visit juneteenthky.com, call 859-420-8176 or visit Facebook: Heart Of KY Juneteenth.

But that’s hardly the only thing happening this weekend, which will be one of the busiest in Mercer County since the state government lifted the COVID-19 restrictions. There are two multi-day events, including the 12th Annual Settlement and Raid at Old Fort Harrod State Park on Saturday, June 19, and Sunday, June 20, and the 10th Annual PlayThink at Terrapin Hill, which runs from Wednesday, June 16, through Sunday, June 20. And that’s on top of everything else that’s happening, including a Father’s Day celebration at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill complete with a vintage ball game and car show on Saturday, June 19. No matter what you’re interested in, you’ll find plenty to do this weekend.
