A ‘Welcome Home’ for Veterans

Matthew Mobley is organizing Welcome Home, a support group for veterans. “We are here to give you a handshake and a hug and let you know you are not alone,” Mobley said.

A new veterans support group, Welcome Home, started this week at Southside Christian Church and will meet each Tuesday from 6:30-8:30. An outreach of Celebrate Recovery, a Christ-centered recovery program and support group, Welcome Home helps veterans recover from life’s “hurts, habits and hang-ups,” including mental health and addiction issues.

The group is hosted by U.S. Air Force veteran and Harrodsburg native Matthew Mobley. A 2000 graduate of Harrodsburg High School, Mobley did one tour of duty in Iraq. Once he hit the eight year mark, he decided it was time to leave the Grand Forks Air Force base in North Dakota and return to his Mercer County home.

Mobley joined Southside Christian Church in the fall of 2016. Mobley said his pastor, Seth Widner, challenged the congregation to do God’s work and not wait for a solution, but to be a part of it.

Mobley, who suffered with addiction issues while in the military and had also received his masters degree in psychology, felt he had a unique skill set that could help veterans struggling with depression, drug use or feelings of isolation, get back to a healthy place.

“Veterans need to know they are not alone and there is a community of people who love them and truly care for them,” said Mobley.
