Organ Donation: How to save a life
“No matter the age, everyone has the potential to save life through organ donation,” said Charlotte Wong, community outreach coordinator at Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates. Wong will be speaking at the next Haggin Health Forum on Thursday, April 13, at the Mercer County Public Library. April is recognized as Donate Life Month.
Wong said there are currently 1,000 people on the organ transplant waiting list in the state of Kentucky and there are 122,000 nationally.
“These are people who suffer from diseases and illnesses that there is absolutely no medication and no other medical procedure that is going to save their life. These people have been told that unless we find an organ, and transplant it, you’re going to die,” she said. “All of those numbers to me are very overwhelming. I could not imagine making a decision that is going to affect 1,000 peoples’ lives.”
