Burgin led for the majority of their game Friday night against 12th Region opponent Boyle County, but were unable to match the Lady Rebels at the free throw line down the stretch coming up short in a 53-46, overtime loss.
After falling behind, 6-4, early, the Lady Bulldogs tightened their jaws on defense holding Boyle County scoreless for the remainder of the first quarter and building a 10-6 lead.
Burgin’s lead grew to as high as eight points in the second quarter, 14-6, before Boyle County’s offense came back to life with three straight three pointers. Still Burgin was able to keep their composure and held a 21-16 lead going into halftime.
Boyle County continued to hit from behind the arch throughout the third quarter and after eight minutes of play in the second half trailed by just one possession heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter Burgin suffered an offensive dry spell, scoring only seven points in the quarter. Trailing, Boyle County looked to stop the clock by playing aggressive and driving to the lane looking for contact. The Lady Rebels worked their way to the free throw line nine times in the final period converting on seven of them as they clawed their way back into the game. Boyle County finished the game 13 of 18 from the stripe compared to Burgin’s 13 of 28.
