Lady Titans Upset in 46th District Opener 2-1

The Lady Titan’s soccer team was upset, 2-1, by East Jessamine Tuesday night in the opening round of the 46th District. Mercer took both games in the regular season, but required penalty kicks both times.

“We told the team that they had to come out ready to play,” said Mercer Head Coach Tony Brown. “We knew it was going to be a battle with both of our regular season games going to shoot outs. I’m really just at a loss for words.”

The opening minutes of action proved how evenly matched the two teams were, with possession being won and lost by each team throughout midfield.

With less then 10 minutes remaining in the first half, it looked like the game would remain scoreless. A late run by the Lady Jaguars changed that with back to back shots on target. East Jessamine’s first goal beat Mercer keeper Amanda Howard, but bounced off the cross bar and back into play. Forward Devon Burnside collected the rebound and shot over Howard again, this time finding the back of the net giving East Jessamine the 1-0 lead.

Shannon Murray showed off her ball control skills dribbling the opening kickoff of the second half into Jaguar territory, drawing a foul just outside their 18-yard-box. Mercer mid fielder Erika Kehrt tied the game at 1-all on the free kick beating East Jessamine keeper Heather Welch high to hit the net. With the game level the Lady Titans made the critical error of relaxing.
