Mercer Boys Track Dominate On Senior Night

The Mercer County Titans track and field team hosted their final All-Comers of the season on Tuesday, May 5. It was also senior night for the Titans, who celebrated 13 seniors that included: Alexis Benham, Daniel Butler, Grayson Perry, Jael Wooldridge, Jayden Sailor, Jon Konner Moore, Journee Humpert, Leah Odell, Ralasia Piazza, Reagan Baker, Roxanne Bogardus, Rylan Lake and Trevor Bradley.

The Mercer boys had a dominant victory, scoring 223.50 points and Boyle County finished second with 95. The girls’ team finished second, scoring 106 points just behind Boyle County, which won with 126 points. It was a busy afternoon for all the Mercer athletes, and the Titans won seven events and racked up 30 medals.

The meet kicked off with both of the Titans’ 4×800-meter relay teams taking first place. Ian Alcorn won both the 110 and 300 hurdles to score 20 points for Mercer. Sophomore Liam Moffet won the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.85 and junior Mijaia Dunn placed second in a loaded 200-meter dash. Junior Ashton Butler went the distance, winning the 3200 and 1600-meter runs.

Piazza scored 33 points at the meet, including two gold medals in triple and high jump, a silver in long jump and she placed fourth in the 100-meter dash. Perry won the girls’ pole vault event with a height of eight feet and fellow senior Moore placed first in the boys’ triple jump. The best was saved for last in the meet with Mercer taking a narrow victory in a mixed 4×100-meter relay made of throwers only. The team of Maddi Baker, Allie Fenwick, Lake and Noah Nichols won the race by a half-second.

The Titans get ready for a trip to the regions on Thursday, May 14, at Whitley County.
