Citizens weigh in on data center project

The Harrodsburg-Mercer County Joint Planning and Zoning Commission held a forum on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at the Stables to gather community input on potential ordinances related to data centers. Approximately 400 people attended, with nearly 40 speakers sharing their concerns with the commission.
After discussions that a hyper-scale data center was different from what the commissioners considered normal industrial usage, they decided to hire a consultant at their Dec. 5, 2025, meeting.Β The commission hired Curry Roberts of Parkway Strategies.
At the Tuesday, Jan. 13, Mercer County Fiscal Court meeting, citizens spoke against the data center, citing concerns over sound pollution, cost to the taxpayer, loss of farmland and potential water pollution and water run off. The Fiscal Court asked the Harrodsburg-Mercer County Industrial Authority Executive Director, Greyson Evans, to present information on what a data center is, along with its benefits and drawbacks, at its next meeting.
