The Mercer County Titans (19-10) finished regular season play against one of the tougher opponents on their schedule on Friday, Feb. 21. Adair County (25-5) had won 16 of their last 17 games before stepping onto Chris Souder Court. The Titans honored 2025 graduates from the bass fishing, cheerleading, girls and boys basketball teams prior to tip off. Mercer County boys basketball had a send off for five soon-to-be graduates: Trevor Ellis, Hagan Preston, Andrew Tatum, Jadon King and Braylon Ellis were each honored for their Titan careers. Mid-morning on Friday, Titan senior Trevor Ellis was named 12th Region Player of the Year. Carter Baughman was the last Titan player to receive the award, in 2019.
The Indians starting lineup consisted of four seniors and a junior, and their veteran presence showed in the way they played. Adair County averages 73.9 points per game ranking them 13th in the state, but when facing the state’s third ranked defense and a slower paced offense in the Titans, they let their defense set the tone. King got on the floor and fought for the opening offensive rebound after a missed three from T. Ellis. The Indians sank two mid range jumpers, but B. Ellis found Jackson Doughty in the corner for the Titans’ first basket. Mercer trailed 4-3 with 4:09 left in the first quarter.
