If all the firework tents and the occasional firecracker haven’t already reminded you, Independence Day is nearly here. The holiday happens on Thursday, July 4, but there is a full week of events here locally.

First up, celebrate the nation’s founding with Ragged Edge Community Theatre’s production of”1776,” which continues its two week run. Show times start at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 28, and Saturday, June 29, with a matinee performance at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 30. Ragged Edge is located at 111 South Main Street. But that’s not the only live drama. Celebrate the founding of Harrodsburg when “James Harrod: The Battle for Kentucky” returns to the Old Fort Harrod State Park Amphitheater (100 South College Street) on Friday, July 5. Celebrating Harrodsburg’s 250th anniversary, the live outdoor live drama runs every Friday and Saturday in July starting Friday, July 5. The annual fireworks show at Anderson-Dean Community Park (1501 Louisville Road) happens Wednesday, July 3, with the boom-boom-boom scheduled to start at 10 p.m. In addition to fireworks, there will be food trucks, including Biscuit’s BBQ and Catering, Bus N’ it Out, Casa Mobile, Triple J&C BBQ Team. Snacks and sweets include M&J Concessions, Poppin’ J’s, Snowie Ice, the Scoop. Musician J.D. Shelburne, who recently performed at Harrodsburg’s 250th Celebration, will be one of the headliners at Danville’s Fourth of July celebration on Thursday, July 4, starting at 5 p.m. The event happens at Danville’s Millennium Park (1000 Cunningham Way, Danville) with food trucks, basketball tournament, face painting, kids home run derby and live music by the Lexington Concert Band starting at 6:30 p.m. and Shelburne playing as they begin the fireworks show. The biggest fireworks show in Mercer County–which is so big it also happens in Garrard County— 22nd Annual Lights Over Herrington is scheduled to start at dusk on Friday, July 5, 2024. The best viewing point is from the Kennedy Bridge, but there’s no bad place to watch the show. lightsoverherrington.com.
