The Mercer County Titans baseball team (13-12) rallied in a convincing 12-2 win over Somerset (14-9) on Saturday evening, April 20. The Titans had previously lost two games against Bullitt Central and Frederick Douglass and only scored one run in the process.
Somerset had two players single in the top of the first and an error by third baseman Noah Worthington allowed the Briar Jumpers to grab one run. Junior pitcher Raygan New struggled from the first pitch, but the Titan batters took notice and displayed excellent vision at the plate. The first nine pitches came without a swing and Carter Devine and Andrew Tatum each walked. Senior Will Johnson singled over first base and scored two runners to retake the lead, 2-1. The Titans never lost the lead again, and despite having two outs, Brayden Campbell and Noah Worthington waited patiently and each walked. Heroically, senior Evann White stepped up to the plate with bases loaded and drilled a fly ball deep into right field. The Briar Jumpers fumbled the ball while fielding and White sped around the bases, tripled and scored three runners.
Aaron May walked the first batter in four pitches, and back-to-back singles brought in another run for Somerset.
Neither squad could build any momentum in the third inning. Eventually, the Titans made it back to the top of their lineup in the bottom of the fourth inning. Devine singled a line drive into left field, and Tatum and Ayden Stephens each walked. Devine took home on a passed ball and Jackson Doughty doubled on a powerful shot into right field. Worthington’s single into center field put the Titans up 11-2 at the end of four innings.
