William Thomas “Tom” Phillips, 84, of Lexington and formerly of Versailles, husband of 57 years to Jane Squifflet Phillips, died Monday, May 22, 2023, at his home. Born July 13, 1938, in Mercer County, he was the son of the late William Hartford and Marie Cotton Phillips. He was a 1956 graduate of Harrodsburg High School, a 1963 graduate of Transylvania University, and was also a 1967 graduate of the National Trust School at Northwestern University. Tom devoted his entire 32-year career to the Woodford Bank, where he headed the Trust Department and retired as a Vice President. He greatly enjoyed reading and loved being outdoors, spending his free time fishing, hunting and especially playing golf. Tom was a loving daddy to Emily Phillips (Brent) Gaunce, of Carlisle; beloved “TomDaddy” to William Michael “Will” Gaunce; brother-in-law to Jean Wheatley and Mary Ann (Victor) Witt; uncle to Hart (Shauna) Moore, Elizabeth (Steve) Hammelrath, Catherine (Arthur) Lane and Alison (Kevin) Calhoun; and is also survived by a host of great-nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his sister and brother-in-law, Martha Jane and Tebbs S. Moore, a special aunt and uncle, Martha Cotton and Harry S. Schultz, and his parents-in-law, Dr. Horace T. & Willa Mae Squifflet. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 3-5 p.m., Saturday, June 3, at Graham Cottage on the campus of Transylvania University. Internment will be on the family lot in Spring Hill Cemetery. The family wishes to gratefully thank Eva Burnside, Amy Deli and Dr. Chitra Raghavan for their loving care of Tom. As an avid golfer, Tom took great pleasure in encouraging young people to enjoy the sport as much as he did. As such, memorial contributions are encouraged to the PGA Junior League Program in lieu of flowers. Arrangements are under the direction of Mathers-Gaunce Funeral Home. Condolences and video tribute are available at www.mathersgaunce.com.
