Lady Bulldogs battle for big win on senior night

The Burgin Lady Bulldogs (5-17) celebrated not just four seniors, but a 46-44 victory over the Williamsburg Lady Jackets (7-16) Thursday, Feb. 10. Seniors Brynn Simpson, Ellie Jenkins, Grace Cocanougher and Kaiden Lewis combined for 18 points on their special night to get the hard fought win. The win was extra sweet for the Bulldogs avenging an earlier, 37-59, lost at Williamsburg.
It didn’t take long for the seniors to make an impact with Lewis starting the game with a steal and splitting a pair of free throws followed by a long 2-pointer from Jenkins with Baleigh Turner assisting the play, 3-0. After a free throw from the Lady Jackets, Lewis was back at the basket with a layup and Turner tallying another assist, 5-1.
Freshman Isabella Mays added in two free throws and found a hole in the Williamsburg defense for an easy layup, the Lady Jackets answered with a 3-pointer, 9-4. Burgin stayed aggressive with Turner hitting a triple from the top of the key with an assist from Mays, 12-4. The first quarter came to a close with a layup from the Lady Jackets and Jenkins knocking down a pair of free throws, 14-6.
Williamsburg started the second quarter hot with a quick four points off of two midrange 2-pointers, 14-10. Ashton Lester gave the Lady Bulldogs a spark with a layup, But the Lady Jackets kept the margin at four points with a putback, 16-12….
