Mercer County Senior High School celebrated a second 46th District Championship win in a span of three days. The Lady Titans (16-18) prevailed over the East Jessamine Lady Jaguars (18-11) in a  dominating performance. The 7-1 win is the first district title for Mercer Softball since 2017 and the first ever season both the baseball and softball Titans have won district in the same season.

Back to back errors by the East Jessamine infield allowed Elle Prewitt and Kallise Gammon to take base. Ry’Ann Tharp singled to Kaley Naylor on third base who tagged Prewitt out, and Brooklin Burgess followed with a single to left field, scoring Gammon, her first RBI in an impressive four RBI performance. Makayla McDowell struck out Shepherd and Devine to end the inning with runners on third and second base.

The Lady Titans played consistent and decisive defense through all seven innings. Head Coach Rob Tharp attributes this play to tactical changes and development throughout the season.

“We have gelled together in the latter part of this season. Everyone is understanding their roles better and what is expected of them for us to be successful,” said Tharp.

Tharp believes Ashley Howard’s shift against the Lady Jaguars is one of the best games he’s seen her pitch; the freshman found her best form at the right time and allowed only one run while striking out four batters.

Howard was the only Mercer batter to place a hit in the top of the second inning. She proceeded to strike out the next two batters in the Lady Jaguars rotation.

In the third, Tharp was walked before Burgess smacked a deep shot to the left field wall, doubling and scoring Tharp to give the Lady Titans a 2-0 lead.
