Titans Baseball Club Suffers First Loss of Summer

Jackson Baughman makes the throw from second to first base in the Titans Baseball Club’s game Tuesday.
The Titans Baseball Club (TBC) 17U team suffered their first loss of the season Tuesday night at the hands of the South Lexington Baseball Club (SLBC), composed of players from Paul Laurence Dunbar, Lafayette, Henry Clay and Lexington Catholic.
The SLBC looked like they would run away with the game, holding a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning.
With two outs and a runner of first base Mercer’s offense got to work. Tanner Robbins was able to beat out the throw from South Lexington’s shortstop Caleb Garner for a base hit.
Camden Martin put the Titans on the scoreboard with a base hit to shallow right field that scored Brandon Hine from second base. Robbins took advantage of a wild throw to home plate by SLBC right fielder Lee Ritchie, scoring on the play and making the score, 4-2.
Both teams added a run to their total in the fourth inning, and after a scoreless fifth and sixth innings, the score remained 5-3.
An RBI by Colton Brown in the bottom of the seventh inning pulled Mercer within a run of SLBC and courtesy runner Mason Murphy maneuvered his way into scoring position stealing second base with one out.
That was as close as the Titan’s would get however, as the SLBC got the final two outs holding on for the win, 5-4.
