Lady Titans Unable to Hold On Against Southwestern

Kayla Crawley, right, slides into second base in the top of the third inning before eventually scoring in the Lady Titans 10-3 loss to Southwestern.

The Lady Titans softball team held a 3-2 lead in the top of the third inning, but were unable to hold on against Southwestern in the opening round of the 12th Region Tournament.

“We ran into a buzz saw; we didn’t produce offensively like we thought we would,” said Mercer Head Coach Robbie Tharp. “That’s a good team (Southwestern) over there. They hit the ball like crazy today and we didn’t.”

Lady Warriors pitcher Sydney Fourman helped her cause in the bottom of the first inning, hitting one over the wall for a two RBI homerun, giving Southwestern a 2-0 lead.

After a scoreless second inning the Lady Titans’ offense took advantage of sloppy Southwestern defense. With one out Kayla Crawley layed down a bunt and beat the throw for a base hit, she then used her speed to steal second base, moving into scoring position. Mercer pitcher Kaylee Russell followed Crawley with another bunt, forcing Fourman to field the hit and make the throw to first. Fourman’s throw went low allowing Crawley to reach third base and Russell to make it to first safely.
