University of Miami of Ohio freshman and Mercer County native Matthew Honchel has been named the Mid-American Conference East Division Player of Week announced by the leagues office Monday. The former Mercer County Titan is the RedHawks’ fourth weekly winner this spring.
From his number two spot in the lineup, Honchel batted .786 in Miami’s series win over Toledo this weekend. He had 11 hits in 14 at-bats, including a double in each contest. He registered a career-high four hits in Saturday’s regularly-scheduled game, then equaled that mark on Sunday. In the series opener, suspended Friday and finished Saturday, Honchel had three hits, giving him a team-high 14 multiple-hit games (in 27 outings).
