The Harrodsburg City Commission gave first reading to an ordinance requiring property owners or their designees to be present at the property when water service is requested.
At their regular meeting on Monday, Aug. 25, the commissioners learned the need for the ordinance became apparent after a recent. The owner requested water turned on at rental property. When tenants left, they left a valve open that flooded the floor.
Commissioner Kerry Anness said other utilities require owners or designees to be present during service calls. At Anness’s request, City Attorney Norrie Currens drafted an ordinance. Currens asked the commissioners to look it over and if they were happy they could give it a first reading.
Chief Administrative Officer Stacey Maynard suggested adding a time frame for services. Currens noted the ordinance requires 24 hour notice for service.
Maynard said the city has discussed setting up certain days and times for service.
“We’ve been trying to come up with a system,” said Maynard, who was attending her first city commission since being injured in a four-wheeler accident earlier this month. Maynard had to undergo surgery to repair both wrists. She did not attend Monday’s meeting in her official capacity.
“We’ll pick out the days that make sense,” Maynard said.
Mayor Bob Williams also had some advice for people coming to city hall to get service.”Don’t scream. Do not get nasty. Do not curse,” Williams said. He said the employees in city hall were just doing their jobs.
“If you’ve got a problem, if you feel the need to cuss at somebody, come see me,” Williams said.
