The Burgin Lady Bulldogs (6-10) had an all-around great performance in a 64-29 thumping of the Frankfort Lady Panthers (1-14) on Monday, Jan. 27, in the Jack Coleman Sr. Gymnasium.
Burgin was electric. Their speed and confidence showed in each possession, and their ball movement was so well executed, at times it seemed like they were playing against air. Sophomore Kynlee Sexton gave the Lady Bulldogs a 5-0 lead after she swished a trey on the left shoulder. A little over a minute later Sexton was fouled while shooting from the same spot, and made all three free throws. Next it was Senior Jemma Jenkins who drained a three from the same spot and gave Burgin a commanding 13-0 lead. Ashton Lester forced two turnovers in the first quarter that led to baskets, one of which, a swift pass forward to Gabby Thompson in transition for an easy bucket. Freshman Jocelyn Stanley missed a three off the side of the backboard, but grabbed her own missed shot and stepped inside the perimeter before swishing a mid range jumper. At the end of the first quarter, Burgin was firing on all cylinders and led 23-3. The Bulldogs had several second chance opportunities to thank for their tremendous offensive display in the first quarter.
“I was very pleased with the effort we gave last night boxing out. We have been working on that phase all year to try to make up for some height disadvantages we face about every game. [I] thought all the girls did a pretty decent job of sealing and then going to get the ball,” said Coach Keith Monson.
Seconds after Lester drained a three to reclaim the momentum early in the second quarter, Thompson jumped a pass and dribbled through the whole Frankfort lineup before passing to Leah Jenkins in the corner for another Lady Bulldog three-pointer.
