The Harrodsburg City Commission made personnel moves this week, including rehiring an officer for the Harrodsburg Police Department and giving raises to the chief of the Harrodsburg Fire Department and employees at the water treatment plant.

At their regular meeting on Monday, Aug. 12, the city commission voted to hire Andrew Lay as an officer in the HPD at $26 per hour, including additional pay as a Taser and firearms instructor and as a police training officer. Lay’s hire is effective on passage of drug and alcohol testing and a background check. Lay, who formerly served with HPD, has more than 12 years of experience, according to Commissioner Missy Banks.

The city commission also approved a new police officer training reimbursement contract to conform with state law. Banks called it a language update that covers contract buy-outs and reimbursement for HPD if an officer’s contract is bought out by another department.

The commission approved a rehired-retired police contract, which would be similar to other deals that provide backup law enforcement for festivals, putting “more feet on the street,” Banks said.

The commission also voted to accept the resignation of Cpl. Ridge Yeast effective Aug. 16 and to promote Det. Rob Oney to sergeant at a rate of $28.92 per hour effective on passage of drug and alcohol testing. The detective position will not be staffed right away, Chief Administrative Officer Stacey Maynard explained.

The commission approved a $2 per hour pay increase for Harrodsburg Fire Chief Michael Cox effective Aug. 12. Banks praised the job Cox had done since being named chief last year. She said they wanted to make the chief’s pay competitive with other departments.
