    Grand Council at the Fort

    11:00 am-4:00 pm
    Apr-13-19
    Old Fort Harrod State Park
100 S College St, Harrodsburg, KY 40330, USA

The Old Fort Harrod State Park is hosting a Grand Council re-enactment on Saturday, April 13, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“The Grand Council is a small re-enactment meant to show the political strife between the pioneers and natives here on the frontier,” said David Coleman, park manager.  “The entire thing is unscripted and completely off the cuff.  We don’t even know who will be here to play the different roles so it really does flow and feel like a real council every time. “

Although there is no documentation that a council ever took place at Fort Harrod the event was common on the frontier.

“As tradition tells us, the natives would have been invited into the fort and escorted to the council fire.  They would then ‘bless’ the fire and pass the peace pipe around indicating they had accepted the settler’s offer of peaceful conversation. They would then spend as much time as they liked explaining their position with no interruptions,” said Coleman.“The whole party would then break for the night, and then the next day the settlers would have their chance to speak their minds.”

Coleman said the re-enactment cannot break for a night so they just speak for a few minutes and then present the case.

According to Coleman this council sets the stage for the settlement and raid re-enactment that occurs in June.

    An afternoon with Jemima Boone

    2:30 pm-4:30 pm
    Apr-14-19
    Mercer County Public Library
109-109 W Lexington St, Harrodsburg, KY 40330, USA

The Mercer County Public Library is presenting a Chautauqua character, Jemima Boone played by Betsy Smith on Sunday, April 14 at 2:30 p.m. called “An Afternoon with Jemima Boone.”

“We are excited to share this experience with history buffs, writers, lifelong learners, and those just curious about the past. This is a great opportunity to hear what life was like during the days of Daniel Boone,” said Tracy Munday, adult programmer for the library.  “We believe this will be a great experience for people of all ages. The program is free and open to the public. We hope to see everyone at the library this week.”

Jemima Boone was the fourth child of Daniel and Rebecca Bryan Boone. She was born in North Carolina, on Oct. 4, 1762, and helped pioneer two American frontiers: Kentucky and Missouri. Boone is the star of one of the most best-known stories to come out of Kentucky’s pioneer past, when in July 1776, she was kidnapped by a group of Native Americans. Boone was 14-years-old at the time and her father, Daniel Boone,  led a search party that rescued the girls after three days in captivity.

The Chautauqua Character stories are part of the Kentucky Humanities, a nonprofit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities and is supported by the National Endowment and by private contributions.
