  • Grand Council at the Fort

100 S College St, Harrodsburg, KY 40330, USA

100 S College St, Harrodsburg, KY 40330, USA

The Old Fort Harrod State Park is hosting a Grand Council re-enactment on Saturday, April 13, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“The Grand Council is a small re-enactment meant to show the political strife between the pioneers and natives here on the frontier,” said David Coleman, park manager.  “The entire thing is unscripted and completely off the cuff.  We don’t even know who will be here to play the different roles so it really does flow and feel like a real council every time. “

Although there is no documentation that a council ever took place at Fort Harrod the event was common on the frontier.

“As tradition tells us, the natives would have been invited into the fort and escorted to the council fire.  They would then ‘bless’ the fire and pass the peace pipe around indicating they had accepted the settler’s offer of peaceful conversation. They would then spend as much time as they liked explaining their position with no interruptions,” said Coleman.“The whole party would then break for the night, and then the next day the settlers would have their chance to speak their minds.”

Coleman said the re-enactment cannot break for a night so they just speak for a few minutes and then present the case.

According to Coleman this council sets the stage for the settlement and raid re-enactment that occurs in June.

For more information, visit the fort’s website at parks.ky.gov/parks/recreationparks/fort-harrod.

  • An afternoon with Jemima Boone

109-109 W Lexington St, Harrodsburg, KY 40330, USA

The Mercer County Public Library is presenting a Chautauqua character, Jemima Boone played by Betsy Smith on Sunday, April 14 at 2:30 p.m. called “An Afternoon with Jemima Boone.”

“We are excited to share this experience with history buffs, writers, lifelong learners, and those just curious about the past. This is a great opportunity to hear what life was like during the days of Daniel Boone,” said Tracy Munday, adult programmer for the library.  “We believe this will be a great experience for people of all ages. The program is free and open to the public. We hope to see everyone at the library this week.”

Jemima Boone was the fourth child of Daniel and Rebecca Bryan Boone. She was born in North Carolina, on Oct. 4, 1762, and helped pioneer two American frontiers: Kentucky and Missouri. Boone is the star of one of the most best-known stories to come out of Kentucky’s pioneer past, when in July 1776, she was kidnapped by a group of Native Americans. Boone was 14-years-old at the time and her father, Daniel Boone,  led a search party that rescued the girls after three days in captivity.

The Chautauqua Character stories are part of the Kentucky Humanities, a nonprofit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities and is supported by the National Endowment and by private contributions.

  • Holy Week
    12:00 pm
    Apr-15-19-Apr-19-19

312 S Main St, Harrodsburg, KY 40330, USA

312 S Main St, Harrodsburg, KY 40330, USA

Mercer County will be honoring Holy Week from Sunday, April 14, through Easter Sunday on April 21, hosted at Harrodsburg Baptist Church.

Holy Week, sometimes called Passion Week occurs annually the week before Easter. It is the time when Christians around the world remember the events leading up to Jesus’ death and resurrection.

“I look forward to Holy Week services each year. We come together to celebrate the heart of the gospel – the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” said Terry Morrison, president of the Mercer County Ministerial Association. “It allows us to focus on the One who unites us, and not on the doctrinal differences that divide us.”

The Ministerial Association has several events planned including an outdoor Stations of the Cross on Main Street. The event will begin at the courthouse steps on Friday, April 19 at 10 a.m. Daily events are scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. and include  lunch.

    The lineup is:

    • Monday, April 15: With Pastor Paul Gibson and Harrodsburg Baptist Church.

    • Tuesday, April 16: With Presiding Elder Kenneth Golphin of St. Peter AME and Pastor Louise Spencer of Wayman Chapel AME.

    • Wednesday, April 17: With St. Andrew Catholic Church and Pastor Josh Snyder of Burgin Christian Church.

    • Thursday, April 18: With Harrodsburg Community Church and Rev. Karen Hartsfield of Harrodsburg United Presbyterian Church.

    • Friday, April 19: With Pastor Doug Wesley and Hopewell Baptist Church.

Father Peter Doddema of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church says Holy Week is an important part of Easter used to remember Christ’s sacrifice and to prepare for celebrating Easter.

“Some days during Holy Week hold a special significance that connects to the story of Jesus’ love. Palm Sunday tells of Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem for the Passover celebration. This day is typically celebrated by waving palm branches and with shouts of “Hosanna,” said Doddema. “Maundy Thursday (or Holy Thursday) is the day we remember Jesus’ last meal that he shared with his disciples. This meal is remembered, today, through the sacrament of communion (also known as the Last Supper or the Eucharist). This day also focuses on how Jesus was betrayed and arrested.”

Doddema said Good Friday centers on the cross and Christ’s sacrifice.

“It is there where Jesus died a death typically reserved for murderers and political enemies. This day serves as a reminder that Jesus died so that all people may be forgiven and experience a renewed relationship with God,” said Doddema. “Holy Week is a very important part of Easter.”

Jesus’ Last Supper was actually a Jewish Passover. Isaac Brickner of Jews for Jesus is planning to re-create the traditional Passover service at Harrodsburg Christian Church on Wednesday, April 17, at 6:30 p.m.

In this free event, Brickner plans to explain how the Passover foreshadowed Jesus’ death and resurrection in a presentation called “Christ in the Passover.”

Brickner traditional items  used at the Passover meal and detail their spiritual significance. He will also explain the connection between the events of the first Passover in Egypt and the redemption that Jesus accomplished, as well as the deep bond between the ancient Passover feast and the Christian communion celebration used today.

Jews for Jesus has presented “Christ in the Passover” at over 38,000 churches. It has been enthusiastically received by Christians who appreciate learning more about the Jewish backgrounds of their faith.

Moishe Rosen, founder of Jews for Jesus, has co-written the book, Christ in the Passover, with his wife, Ceil.

This seminal work includes a look at Passover in ancient times and how it is practiced today. It will be available after the presentation.

Brickner, a fifth-generation Jewish believer in Jesus, succeeded Rosen as executive director of Jews for Jesus in 1996.

Brickner has established branches in eleven countries, including the United States, Brazil, Israel, Russia, France and South Africa.

“We exist to make the Messiahship of Jesus an unavoidable issue to our Jewish people worldwide,” said Brickner. “There are still a few that haven’t heard of us.”

Isaac Brickner will be available to answer questions after the presentation. For more information, call 734-3224.

The Harrodsburg Kiwanis Club is hosting the 11th annual Community Easter Egg Hunt at Old Fort Harrod State Park. The activities start at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 20. This event is free.

The annual Kiwanis Easter Egg Hunt at the fort will also include a dedicated area for children with special needs.

“There will be an entire area designated for any special needs child or adult who would like to share in the fun of Easter in a safe and comfortable environment,” said secretary of the Kiwanis Club, Amy Riley.  “We can’t wait to share in the Easter joy with these very special folks.”

Riley said the Academy on Main and other adult special needs organization have plans to join in the fun.

“Because the demand was so high last year and our egg hunt grows every year, we have also decided to expand the ages of children who can hunt,” said Riley.  “This year we will offer egg hunt areas for children from ages birth all the way through age 12.”

Riley said in addition to the egg hunting, the Kiwanis Club is also sponsoring a special area for sidewalk chalk drawing, cornhole games, an egg toss, three legged race and spoon and egg race after the big hunt.

“One of the activities we are most proud of is the area where parents can create Kid Care ID kits,” said Riley. “Kid Care ID kits allow parents the chance to record important physical and demographic information about their children in the unfortunate event that this is needed by law enforcement if their child goes missing.  It includes a free up to date picture and area for a DNA sample and we hope all Mercer Countians will take this important step to keep their children safe.”

Riley said the Easter Bunny will make an appearance at the event and free pictures may be taken.

Harrodsburg Harvest Coffee is hosting a poetry reading event in a partnership with Nomadic Ink on Saturday, April 27 from 1-4 p.m.

Tony Sexton, who founded the group Nomadic Ink in 2006 said he hopes many people would participate and benefit from the comradely of writing and listening to poetry.

“Nomadic Ink was created after a workshop I conducted and every one wanted to continue. We started meeting in various places like the park and homes, etc, thus the name Nomadic Ink,” said Sexton. “We call ourselves Ink Blots. The mission is to lead hopeful writers into inspiration and confidence in their abilities to reach their goals as writers.”

Sexton hopes writers and listeners come to participate in the event.

“The event is open to all those interested in getting started. We would also like to have some writers involved in that event who are not yet members of Nomadic Ink. And we are hoping to have folks who are not writers but love poetry to come and listen, said Sexton. “We are always encouraging other writers to join us and to encourage others who want to start writing. Our meeting are designed for both established writers and those who are just beginning or want to get started.”
