Members of the Mercer County Senior High School boys and girls tennis teams competed in the regional tournament May 4-5, at Eastern Kentucky University, with several Titans advancing deep into the individual competition.

Although Mercer County did not qualify for the regional team tournament after losses to West Jessamine and Burgin the previous week, several players continued postseason play in singles and doubles competition.

The boys’ doubles team of Sammy Bragg and Kaleb Murray came within one match of qualifying for the state tournament. The senior duo opened regional play with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory over East Jessamine before advancing by forfeit when their next opponents from Southwestern were unable to compete due to medical issues.

“It’s rough that they didn’t get to play us, but at least we get to play in the next round,” Murray said.

In the second round, Bragg and Murray faced Wayne County’s Jones brothers in what became the final high school match for the longtime doubles partners. Mercer County won the opening game, but Wayne County regained momentum and claimed the match 6-2, 6-0.
