The Lady Titans have been in the gym this summer putting the work in to defend their 12th Region championship title. This past Monday, June 19, they traveled to Rockcastle to face the Lady Rockets. Summer ball is played a little differently with two halves and the scoreboard reset. The Lady Titans were down both halves with only minutes left to play in each, but worked their way back to win both, 21-20 and 21-18.
Rockcastle won the tip, but Mercer’s Sara Dunn was strong defensively in the post and forced them to keep the ball on the perimeter and put up a bad 3-point shot. Anna Kate Drakeford snagged the rebound and the Titans worked the ball around until Drakeford caught Izzy Carlton open under the basket for an easy bucket.
Rockcastle wasted little time getting down the floor and this time hit their 3-point shot, 3-2. Mercer retook the lead when Dunn hit a 3-point shot from the top of the key with the assist to Teigh Yeast.
Mercer took good shots, but the ball refused to fall for them. The Rockets went on a 10-point scoring run, before Yeast broke the momentum with a free throw (in summer basketball, only one free throw attempt is allowed and if made it counts as two points) 12-7.
