Things are heating up in Mercer County. Memorial Day is Monday, May 29, and the first three day weekend of the summer is positively packed with things to do, including the Native Dawn Flute Gathering, Ol’ Iron Rundown and the MYPATH Yoga Festival at Terrapin Hill.

Aquatics Center at Anderson-Dean Community Park reopens May 27.
First up, the Aquatic Center at Anderson-Dean Community Park (1501 Louisville Road) will re open Saturday, May 27, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The pool will be open on Sunday, May 28, from 1 to 6 p.m. and Memorial Day Monday, May 29, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Starting on Friday, June 2, the pool will reopen for regular summer hours. Old Fort Harrod State Park (100 South College Street) will host the Native Dawn Flute Gathering starting Friday, May 26, at 4 p.m. and running until Sunday, May 28 at 6 p.m. Everyone is invited to enjoy three full days of Native American flutes and traditional dancers as well food, crafts and Navajo Frybread. Things kick off Friday at 4 p.m. with Joseph Whitefeather. Performances last 50 minutes with drums and dancers between performances. Saturday starts with the Ohio Valley Native American Veteran Warrior Society Color Guard at 9 a.m. and features a special performance by Fred Keams, Palmer Tolley, Danielle Parrilla and Flow Arts at 8 p.m. Robert Mullinax will close out the festival at 6 p.m. Sunday. Ol’ Iron Rundown returns this year at a new location: Harrodsburg’s warehouse district between Lemons Mill Brewery (166 Marimon Avenue) and Rock Haven Bourbon Bar (419 East Office Street), with events scheduled for various venues. The annual car show happens Saturday, May 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year, they’ll be showing 1964 and older cars and 1966 and older trucks, with traditional hot rods, customs, drag cars and old school motorcycles. Trophies will be handed out at noon at the Local (322 East Office Street). There will also be a Little Greaser Contest starting at noon at the Local. The Miss Ol’ Iron Pinup Pageant at Rock Haven Bourbon Bar starting at 3 p.m. There will also be live music by Jane Rose and the Deadends and Terry Lee Ridley. The MYPATH (Mindful-Yoga-Practice-at-Terrapin-Hill) Festival happens at Terrapin Hill Farm (7695 Mackville Road) from Thursday, May 25, through Sunday, May 28. Billed as a weekend of yoga-related activities— including Acroyoga, Kaleidoscope, Kundalini, and Vinyasa/Hatha—there will also be music, nature, camping, good food and fellowship. All levels of experience are welcome. Early camping starts Thursday at 5 p.m. while the festival proper kicks off Friday at 9 a.m. with hayride farm tours, paddle boats, nature hikes as well as workshops through Sunday.

Chamber Music Festival of the Bluegrass at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill.
The 15th annual Chamber Music Festival of the Bluegrass happens at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill (3501 Lexington Road) starting with the Patron’s Gala Friday, May 26, starting at 5:30 p.m. and running through Sunday, May 28, with two concerts each day at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Spend the weekend with world-renowned musicians from New York’s Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Artistic Directors David Finckel and Wu Han will present special performances at the Meadowview Barn. There will also be two educational lectures led by a representative from Lincoln Center that explore the history of each piece of music in the festival. Patron ticket holders are treated to a private preview concert, private dining with the musicians and reserved seating at each concert. And last but certainly not least, dock diving has come to Mercer County. Dock diving—which I am not making up—is a sport where dogs compete by jumping for distance or height from a dock into a body of water. The sport is popular, with are events in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany and Austria.
DarkK9 Sports is hosting a North America Diving Dogs Competition from Saturday, May 27, through Monday, May 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Does your dog have a competitive spirit and open to new adventures?
