Mercer County Lady Titans were able to exact revenge on the Garrard County Golden Lions for a one-point loss earlier in the season and won in their Thursday, April 27 match-up at home, 7-3
Freshman Ella Davis started in the circle for Mercer. The Lady Titans wasted no time, retiring three straight batters to the dugout. Emily Worthington caught a pop-up at second, Davis connected with Ashley Howard at first base for the second out and third baseman Hannah Beasley found Howard again for the third out.
Kallise Gammon and Haylee Ransdell were both walked, but Mercer couldn’t convert the base runners into runs and the inning ended 0-0.
Mercer’s infield was solid to make quick work of the Golden Lions in the bottom of the second. Worthington tossed a grounder to Howard for the first out and then Mercer’s infield turned a double play. Junior Peyton Boyd caught the toss at second from Worthington to get the advancing runner out and then hit Howard for the play at first.
Mercer got things started in the second inning when Emily Worthington doubled on a 1-1 count and scored Howard and Jersey McGinnis. KJ Sutton earned the RBI with a hard grounder to center, scoring Worthington and advancing Madisynn Griffin to third. Gammon brought Griffin on home with a grounder to third. The inning ended with a strikeout, but Mercer had inflicted the necessary damage and led 4-0.
The Lady Titans continued their strong defensive play. Davis struck out the first two batters and Howard wrapped up the top of the third with the out at first off a popup.
Boyd started the bottom of the third with a hard hit to center field for a triple, but a double play and a grounder ended the inning and the score stayed 4-0.
On Friday, May 5, the Lady Titans play Rockcastle County at home starting at 6 p.m.
