The Mercer County School District will break ground on the athletic complex at Mercer County Senior High School on Thursday, July 21, at 7 p.m.

At the Mercer County Board Of Education’s special-called meeting on Wednesday, July 13, Superintendent Jason Booher gave a progress report on the project. Booher said there had been a pre-construction meeting that morning with architects and contractors.

Tuesday, July 26, is scheduled as the first day of construction. According to the revised BG-1, the district’s plans for the athletics project include constructing a new baseball field next to the softball field to create a combined sports complex. The new field will have a turf infield, backstop, home dugout with locker room, visitor dugout, bull pens, press box, concession and storage. The softball field will be renovated to add a turf infield, new backstop, new press box, concessions, public rest rooms, new visitor dugout, new home dugout with locker room and bull pens. Booher said they hope to have the sod down by Oct. 17. There will also be a rest room addition to the press box and concessions stand at the soccer field. Booher said that construction is scheduled to start by Dec. 2, with the whole project done by Feb. 10.

According to the BG-1, everything will cost more than $7 million, but the superintendent said shortages of supplies are easing up and they hope to save over $200,000 on some aspects of construction. He said fence prices have declined, and they will let board choose what they want to do.

“It was a great meeting today,” Booher said.

School will be in session during construction. He said they discussed ways to avoid traffic during the opening and closing.
