The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a single vehicle crash in Burgin last weekthat killed one child and left several people injured.

At around 9:17 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 18, deputies responded to a call about an accident on Paradise Camp Road.

According to Sheriff Ernie Kelty, a minivan traveling east left the road just past Hughley Lane. The van went over a guardrail, rolled over and hit several trees, Kelty said.

Inside the minivan were two adults and four children. Kaylee Williams, 8, of Danville, died in the accident, according to the coroner’s office.

One of the adults, a female, and the surviving children were taken to Ephraim McDowell Medical Center in Danville for treatment, then transported to UK Albert B. Chandler Emergency Department  in Lexington.

The male adult, identified as Charles Murphy, left the scene of the accident and was found at 3 a.m. the next morning near Kentucky 33. Murphy was also sent to Lexington for treatment of his injuries.

Kelty said investigators are still trying to determine who was driving.

No charges have been filed yet, the sheriff said. He said three deputies are currently investigating.

“Once we get all the evidence and the statements, we’ll meet with the commonwealth’s attorney to determine the charges,” Kelty said. “Let’s just keep the family in our prayers.”

Williams was buried Sunday.
