The Mercer County Bass Fishing team continues their strong start to the season on the water.
They recently competed in competition at Green River Lake and had quite a day.
Freshman Mason Cheek won the Big Bass Trophy by catching a fish weighing 4.34 pounds.
“It was an amazing achievement for Mason (Cheek). This was a surprise to him and he is such a humble kid,” said Mercer County bass fishing Head Coach Periann Blair. “It was a tough day for them out on the lake.”
Once things started rolling for the Titans, things became easier.
“They kept chasing the bass and finally started sight fishing the bass,” said Blair. “He (Cheek) tied on a different swim bait and it got the attention of the fish.”
The Titans hosted the tournament and there was a team tournament outside of individual competition.
Eighth graders Jackson Abrams and Eli Stringfield won first place, freshman Gabe Blair and Cheek placed second and freshman Hope Lanham and sophomore JC Howard placed third.
Mercer County’s next tournament will be on Saturday, Oct. 26, at Herrington Lake. The tournament will be hosted by Danville High School.
