Monson: “We’re still learning how to be consistent”

The tough stretch for the Burgin Lady Bulldogs (1-17) continues, as they have dropped three games since Friday, and their 11th straight overall.

Here is a recap of their last three games.

vs. Garrard Co. (1/28)

The Lady Bulldogs dropped a 64-23 affair to the Lady Lions on Monday, Jan. 28.

Freshman Grace Cocanougher was the leading scoring and rebounds for Burgin, with nine points and 10 rebounds.

“We didn’t come ready to play and they got us down quick,” said Head Coach Keith Monson. “We need to learn how to play a full game with intensity.”

SCORING: Grace Cocanougher 9, Baleigh Turner 5, Brynn Simpson 4, Ellie Jenkins 3, Hannah Stewart 2, Kaiden Lewis 1.

REBOUNDS: Cocanougher 10, Avery Gray 5, Jenkins 3, Julia Arnett 2, Simpson 2.

vs. Augusta (1/26)

It was homecoming night in Burgin, but the Lady Panthers stole the spotlight with a 48-34 victory over the Lady Bulldogs on Saturday, Jan. 26.

Eighth grader Kaiden Lewis was the leading scorer for Burgin with nine points. Freshman Brynn Simpson was the leading rebounder with five.

“We played a lot better than the previous game, but we still had too many turnovers,” said Monson. “Despite the loss, I am pleased with my team’s effort.”

vs. St. Francis (1/25)

Burgin’s struggles continued in a 56-28 loss to the Wyverns on Friday, Jan. 25.

Sophomore Hannah Stewart was the leading scorer for Burgin with nine points.

“We just had a lot of turnovers tonight and a lot of them were unforced,” said Monson. “I’m really disappointed in tonight’s performance because we had two really good practices prior to this game and it just didn’t carry over.”

Monson talked about Stewart’s consistency and play this season.

“Her shooting has gotten a lot better. I just want her to be aggressive and attack the basket more,” he said. “She’s getting better. She’s our point guard and has done a great job in leading our team.”

The Lady Bulldogs will be back on the court on Saturday, Feb. 2, when they travel to Buckhorn to take on Riverside Christian at 10:30 a.m.
